Chapter 25

The London

New Hope Town

The early afternoon sky was clear as the cargo transport lander London settled to a relatively gentle landing at the main terminal in New Hope Town. Returning from a flight to Castillo, the settlement 900 miles northeast of the colonial capital on the other side of a high mountain range London’s pilot Peter Johansson was looking forward to dinner that evening with a female friend, a civilian doctor from Sweden who worked at the main hospital in New Hope Town.

Upon landing, Johansson, his Russian co-pilot and second-in-command Major Alexei Petrovitch and his assistant engineer Captain Greta Marx were ordered to report to the Regimental Commander’s officer within the hour. The transport’s Chief Engineer Major Robert Carey set about making sure that all ship’s systems were working properly before shutting them down. Lieutenant Johnny Castro, the OIC of London’s security detachment, and Master Sergeant Riley Lott, the ship’s senior NCO and cargo master, were told to allow the rest of the crew to go into town if they wanted. They would be off duty until the next morning when they were scheduled to make a run to Novo Napoli.

Upon arrival at General Jamison’s office the three officers were directed to the main conference room where Jamison, Gupta and several other officers including Naomi MacCaffrey were waiting. “How was your trip, Peter?” Alex Martinez asked. The Air Operations officer was Peter Johansson’s direct superior.

“Easy flight, no problems, Colonel,” the Swede replied. “Smooth flying all the way to Winter Haven and back. Nice weather in Castillo too.”

“And what about Gold Company? Was anyone there to greet them?” asked Jamison. Gold had suffered almost fifty percent casualties during the battle for Winter Haven including 35 dead out of the one hundred sixty-nine members who had been up on the eastern hill with Major Malone. The survivors had arrived from Winter Haven two days earlier on the San Francisco but with no room for them at the Ranger barracks they had stayed aboard for the night. They had boarded London for the flight to Castillo where newly built barracks buildings next to the terminal there awaited them.

“Captain Bugese said that they were all very happy to be there. And even with all of the refugees that have been sent to Castillo the new Ranger barracks was kept empty. The settlement director Emily Tsang was there with a welcoming committee. I dare say that drinks will be on the house for that bunch for a while,” the transport pilot said with a grin.

“No doubt. I know they’ve all been walking around with knotted stomachs for a while in Castillo, afraid they would be attacked while there was no one there to protect them,” said Gupta. “Up until now we’ve had no one to send but we knew that if they had to they could evacuate up to the mesa where the new terminal is. The comm center is manned around the clock and scout shuttles are always in the air keeping an eye on things.
